EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Blossom Beyond Foundation proposes the SafeNet Kids Botswana Program, an initiative aimed at equipping children aged 12–18 with critical knowledge and skills to safely navigate the digital world.
With increasing access to mobile devices and the internet in Botswana, children are becoming more vulnerable to cyberbullying, online scams, exploitation, and privacy risks. This project directly responds to these challenges by delivering structured, interactive training on online safety and responsible digital behavior.
The program aligns with BOCRA’s mandate of promoting ICT literacy, child online protection, and safe use of communications technologies.
BACKGROUND & JUSTIFICATION
The rapid growth of internet penetration in Botswana has created new opportunities for learning and communication. However, it has also exposed children to risks such as:
- Cyberbullying
- Online predators
- Identity theft and scams
- Exposure to harmful content
Many children lack the awareness and tools to protect themselves online. Schools and communities also have limited structured programs addressing these risks.
This project aims to bridge that gap by providing practical, accessible, and age-appropriate cyber safety education.

- Promotion of ICT literacy and digital inclusion
- Advancement of child online protection initiatives
- Encouraging safe and responsible use of ICT
- Community outreach and awareness
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIs)
To ensure accountability and measurable impact, the project will track the following indicators:
Output KPIs (Delivery Level)
- Number of children trained: 500-1200 participants
- Number of schools/community centers reached: Francistown Junior
- Number of awareness materials distributed: 10+ guides/posters
Outcome KPIs (Behavior Change)
- % increase in knowledge of online safety (pre vs post assessment): ≥ 60% improvement
- % of children able to identify at least 3 online risks: ≥ 80%
- % of participants demonstrating safe password practices: ≥ 70%
- % reduction in self-reported cyberbullying exposure: ≥ 30%
Impact KPIs (Longer-Term Value)
- Increased reporting of unsafe online behavior through proper channels
- Establishment of Digital Safety Ambassadors in at least 3 schools
- Improved confidence in safe internet usage among participants
Monitoring Tools
- Pre- and post-training quizzes
- Attendance registers
- Feedback surveys
- Facilitator reports
- Case studies and testimonials
RISK MANAGEMENT PLAN
A proactive approach will be used to identify and mitigate potential risks:
Risk | Likelihood | Impact | Mitigation Strategy |
Low attendance from children | Medium | High | Partner with schools & community leaders to mobilize participants |
Limited parental support | Medium | Medium | Conduct brief awareness sessions for parents/guardians |
Technical challenges (devices/internet) | Medium | Medium | Use offline materials and backup devices |
Sensitivity of topics (e.g., cyberbullying experiences) | High | Medium | Use trained facilitators and provide safe, supportive environment |
Sustainability after project ends | Medium | High | Train teachers & introduce Digital Safety Ambassadors |
Budget constraints | Low | Medium | Prioritize core activities and seek co-partners if needed |
🛡️ Safeguarding Measures
- Ensure child-friendly and age-appropriate content
- Maintain confidentiality and privacy of participants
- Provide referral pathways for children needing additional support
- All facilitators adhere to child protection guidelines
REPORTING TO BOCRA
The project will provide:
- Mid-term progress report
- Final project report including KPI performance
- Financial accountability report
- Impact stories and visual documentation (photos, summaries)
INTERACTIVE LEARNING GAMES & ACTIVITIES
To enhance engagement and ensure practical understanding, the SafeNet Kids Botswana Program will incorporate gamified learning and participatory activities designed to make cybersecurity concepts relatable and memorable.
🧩 “Spot the Scam” Challenge
Objective: Teach children how to identify online scams and phishing attempts
How it Works:
- Participants are shown examples of messages (fake giveaways, suspicious links, phishing emails)
- They must decide: “Safe or Scam?”
- Points awarded for correct answers
Learning Outcome:
- Improved ability to detect scams
- Better awareness of online fraud tactics
🎭 Cyberbullying Role-Play
Objective: Help children understand the impact of cyberbullying and how to respond
How it Works:
- Students act out scenarios (bully, victim, bystander)
- Group discusses:
- What went wrong
- How it could be handled better
Learning Outcome:
- Empathy development
- Practical response strategies
- Encouragement to report incidents
🔐 Password Strength Game
Objective: Teach creation of strong, secure passwords
How it Works:
- Students create passwords based on given rules
- Facilitator tests them against “weak vs strong” criteria
- Demonstration of how fast weak passwords can be guessed
Learning Outcome:
- Understanding password security
- Adoption of safer password habits
🕵🏽♀️ “Digital Detective” Game
Objective: Build critical thinking around online safety
How it Works:
- Groups investigate a fictional scenario (e.g., fake social media profile)
- Identify red flags and risks
Learning Outcome:
- Analytical thinking
- Awareness of fake identities and online dangers
🎯 Cyber Safety Quiz Competition
Objective: Reinforce learning through friendly competition
How it Works:
- Teams compete in quiz rounds based on training topics
- Winners receive small prizes (e.g., notebooks, certificates)
Learning Outcome:
- Knowledge retention
- Increased engagement and excitement
🚦 Safe vs Unsafe Sharing Game
Objective: Teach what information is safe to share online
How it Works:
- Cards with different types of information (e.g., school name, passwords, photos)
- Students sort into:
- ✅ Safe to Share
- ❌ Not Safe
Learning Outcome:
- Clear understanding of privacy boundaries
🧠 “Think Before You Click” Simulation
Objective: Encourage responsible decision-making online
How it Works:
- Students are given real-life digital scenarios
- Must choose actions and see consequences
